Exploring the Future of Cooking: The Birth of the Cooking Humanities Institute

Since the camel caravans of the Silk Road connected East and West with spices, and during the Age of Exploration, merchant ships carried tea and coffee to reconstruct humanity's imagination of taste, eating and cooking have driven the transmission of the flame of civilization. On April 20, 2025, the Cooking Humanities Institute, initiated by Vanward, was officially established. The Institute is set up with a council, a president, and an academic committee, each responsible for decision-making, administration, and academic management. Vanward's President, Ren Fujia, was elected as the chairperson of the council; Professor Liu Qing, a special professor and doctoral supervisor at East China Normal University, was elected as the president of the Institute; Professor Li Yun, a professor and doctoral supervisor at the China University of Political Science and Law, was elected as the chairperson of the Academic Committee; and He Xiang, senior director of Vanward, was elected as the executive president.

Wang Renxiang, former director of the Research Department of the邊疆民族與宗教考古研究室 of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Professor Zhan Shi, Professor at Shanghai International Studies University, Mr. Fu Jun, president of the Shanghai Haipai Cuisine Culture Research Institute and founder of Fengshou Xie Zhuang, Professor Meng Qingyan, professor and doctoral supervisor at the China University of Political Science and Law, Principal Lou Zhaohui of Hangzhou Tianchang Primary School, Professor Cao Yanyong, foreign academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and doctoral supervisor at Zhejiang University, and Zhou Xiaoyan, a national-level culinary master and president of the School of Tourism, Hospitality, and Food Science and Engineering at Yangzhou University, were elected as councilors.

The establishment of the Institute marks the official launch of the first cultural exchange institution in China that focuses on cooking humanities and civilization studies. It aims to explore the symbiotic logic between individual creativity in cooking culture and social development through interdisciplinary research, and to build a bridge for global civilization dialogue and innovative practices in sustainable development.

In his speech, Vanward's President and the Chairperson of the Cooking Humanities Institute, Ren Fujia, stated that cooking has always been the deepest footprint of human civilization. The establishment of the Cooking Humanities Institute is an act of respect and guardianship for the genes of civilization. He believes that the Institute should embrace the wish for coexistence, be a builder of humanistic values, become a bridge connecting commerce and humanities, and let scholars of humanities help us explore the depth of cooking with solid scholarly logic, while enterprises use the power of commerce to pave the breadth of cooking.

In terms of a long-term development path, Ren Fujia believes that enterprises must calibrate the direction of technological development with the spirit of humanity, so that technological innovation always serves the good life of humans. The Institute is the best partner to help enterprises achieve this role. "Commerce cannot lose cultural consciousness, and technology needs the nourishment of humanity to 'do what should be done and what should not be done,' to see further into the future, and to become a beacon in the market."

As introduced, the Cooking Humanities Institute will carry out a series of work, including academic research, inheritance and protection, promotion, and culinary innovation, and will also host a variety of culinary industry forums, conferences, and exhibitions.

The establishment of the Institute is also a positive response to national cultural and tourism consumption policies. This year, the country has successively issued documents such as "Several Measures for Further Cultivating New Growth Points and Prospering and Consuming Cultural and Tourism," and "Several Economic Policies for Promoting the High-Quality Development of Culture," which clarify the strategic direction of using cultural and technological integration to promote consumption upgrading and help common prosperity.
